Before a decision, write what you are not deciding yet

2026-08-12 · 6 min read

A decision often feels impossible because you are trying to decide more than one thing at once.

Name the decision that is actually here

An anxious decision often arrives with extra futures attached. You are not only choosing whether to send the application, make the call, end the project, or say yes. You are also trying to decide who you will become afterward, how everyone will react, and whether you will regret it forever.

Before choosing, write the smallest decision that is truly in front of you. Then write what you are not deciding yet. This separates the next step from the whole imagined life.

Make a not-yet list

The list can be plain: I am not deciding the next five years. I am not deciding whether everyone understands. I am not deciding whether this feeling will last. I am deciding whether to take one reversible step today.

This does not remove uncertainty. It gives uncertainty a smaller chair to sit in.

Let the page hold the excess future

A private page is useful because it can hold the futures you are not choosing today. You can write them without treating them as instructions. When the page fades, the decision can return to its real size.

FAQ

What if the decision is irreversible?

Then the not-yet list is even more important. It can reveal what information, support, or time you need before acting.
